International Winter School
Shaping a World-Class University
Scientific direction: Margarita Gleba and Maria Stella Busana
Organising team: Margarita Gleba, Maria Stella Busana, Vanessa Baratella, Bela Dimova, Cristina Ambrosioni, Yaqi Yan
The Winter School “Textiles make the world go round: Textile archaeology for researchers, conservators and curators” organised by the Department of Cultural Heritage: Archaeology and History of Art, Cinema and Music is an intensive one week course aimed at introducing participants to the basics of textile archaeological research, including its practical aspects.
Textiles and other organic materials constituted the overwhelming majority of material culture in the past, yet they remain grossly underrepresented in archaeological and historical research. Although the study of archaeological textiles and related evidence is an increasingly established and popular field with growing potential for interdisciplinary research, this is hampered by the lack of teaching and expertise in this area. The winter school will provide the participants with a starting package of theoretical, methodological and practical tools, as well as the network of specialists and peers. The instructors are internationally renowned experts, leading advanced research in different disciplines (archaeology, archaeometry, conservation, craft) and on different cultural and chronological contexts (Bronze Age Britain, pre-Roman and Roman Italy, Meroitic Sudan, Viking Age Scandinavia and much more).
The Winter School is funded by the University of Padua’s Shaping a World-Class University program.
